Astra International has been implementing its comprehensive community development program through the Desa Sejahtera Astra (Prosperous Astra Village) initiative, focusing on four main development pillars: health, education, environment, and entrepreneurship. This integrated approach has shown significant impact in rural community development across Indonesia.
The health pillar focuses on improving community well-being through various programs targeting mothers, children, and adolescents. In Desa Sejahtera Astra Rammang-Rammang, South Sulawesi, health initiatives were integrated with tourism development through education on clean and healthy living practices, environmental sanitation improvement, and tourism area cleanliness management. These efforts have created a healthier and safer environment for both local communities and visitors.
Astra's education initiatives aim to enhance human resource quality through various programs. In Desa Sejahtera Astra Bumiaji, Kota Batu, a community learning space was developed as a literacy center and capacity building hub. The program utilized community-based empowerment approaches, enabling rural communities to grow independently and sustainably. Digital literacy programs have also been implemented, such as in Desa Sejahtera Astra Bugisang, Klaten, Central Java, where digital education initiatives helped increase village income by Rp50-60 million annually through market expansion and educational tourism packages.
The environmental pillar focuses on ecosystem restoration and sustainable community practices. Through the efforts of community leaders like Ritno Kurniawan in Desa Sejahtera Astra Padang Pariaman, West Sumatra, former illegal loggers were transformed into eco-tourism guides. The development of Nyarai Eco-Tourism has successfully transitioned about 170 community members, with 80% being former loggers, to become tourism guides, demonstrating successful environmental conservation coupled with economic improvement.
The entrepreneurship pillar has shown remarkable success in enhancing local economic potential. In Desa Sejahtera Astra Semedo, Banyumas, community-based sugar production was transformed from selling at Rp2,000-5,000/kg to producing high-quality sugar worth Rp15,000/kg for export. Other success stories include coffee wood and coconut rope exports from Purworejo worth Rp43.52 billion, and the first export of 5,000 goldfish to Vietnam from Pandeglang, Banten. In Bajawa, East Nusa Tenggara, 15 tons of coffee were exported to Thailand valued at over Rp1.65 billion, involving more than 200 farmers.
By the end of 2025, Astra's Desa Sejahtera Astra program has made significant achievements: it has benefited 210,426 individuals, supported 1,515 villages, and recorded exports worth Rp411 billion. These outcomes demonstrate that consistent and collaborative community empowerment initiatives can create substantial positive change. Astra continues to strengthen its community development programs, aligning with its vision of prosperity for the nation and supporting Indonesia's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
