Bank Indonesia (BI) is urging Apple to enable NFC on iPhones to support QRIS Tap transactions by 2026. Currently, QRIS Tap is only available on Android devices. BI aims to expand QRIS Tap usage across different platforms to enhance digital payment adoption in Indonesia. The feature has seen exponential growth since its launch in October 2025, with 508,000 transactions recorded in its first month.
Bank Indonesia (BI) is actively encouraging Apple to enable Near Field Communication (NFC) on iPhones to facilitate the use of QRIS Tap, a digital payment feature launched in October 2025. Currently, QRIS Tap is only compatible with Android devices, limiting its accessibility to a broader user base.
Since its introduction at the Indonesia Digital Economy and Finance Festival (FEKDI), QRIS Tap has shown exponential growth, recording 508,000 transactions within its first month. The feature has been adopted in 14 provinces for public transportation payments, including KRL, MRT Jakarta, LRT Jakarta, and Transjakarta. As of December 2025, QRIS has been adopted by 59 million users and 42 million merchants, with 90% of merchants being micro, small, and medium enterprises (UMKM).
BI has set ambitious targets for QRIS in 2026, aiming for 17 billion transactions, expanding QRIS adoption to 8 countries, reaching 45 million merchants, and serving 60 million users. The central bank's efforts to enable QRIS Tap on iOS devices are part of its broader strategy to enhance digital payment infrastructure in Indonesia.
