PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk. (BBNI), one of Indonesia's major state-owned banks, has taken the precautionary measure of temporarily closing 12 branch offices in Sumatra. This decision follows severe flooding in the region caused by unusually high rainfall starting from November 25, 2025. The bank cited disrupted communication networks and transportation challenges as the primary reasons for the temporary closure.
The flooding has had a catastrophic impact on several areas in Sumatra, particularly in North Sumatra. As of November 28, 2025, the disaster has resulted in 116 confirmed deaths and 42 individuals reported missing. The BNPB (National Disaster Management Agency) has been actively involved in relief efforts and data collection. The affected areas include Tapanuli Utara, Tapanuli Tengah, Tapanuli Selatan, Kota Sibolga, Humbang Hasundutan, Kota Padang Sidempuan, and Pakpak Bharat.
The BNPB has reported that over 1,000 families have been displaced due to the flooding. Relief efforts are ongoing, with temporary shelters established in various locations. For instance, in Tapanuli Utara, a church building is being used as a shelter for approximately 600 families. The situation remains challenging due to the inaccessibility of many affected areas, suggesting that the number of casualties and displaced persons could rise as more information becomes available.
The temporary closure of BNI branches is expected to affect banking services in the region. Customers are likely being directed to alternative banking facilities or digital banking services. BNI's decision to close branches temporarily demonstrates the bank's prioritization of customer and employee safety during this natural disaster.
