The price of chili has seen a significant increase recently due to extreme weather conditions that have disrupted harvests, according to Deputy Trade Minister Dyah Roro Esti. During her visit to Sorong, West Papua, on December 18-19, 2025, Roro observed that the weather had negatively impacted chili crops, leading to higher prices. However, she assured that the overall stock remains sufficient for the Nataru period.
To address the issue and ensure the availability of essential commodities, Roro has collaborated with Deputy Transportation Minister Suntana to maximize the use of sea tolls. This initiative aims to enhance distribution from areas with surplus stock to those facing shortages, thus maintaining price stability.
Roro explained that the unpredictable weather, including dew on chili tips, has caused crop failures, further exacerbating the price increase. She remains optimistic that with proper distribution, the prices will normalize. The government's proactive approach is crucial in managing the supply chain and mitigating the effects of the weather on food prices.
