A recent survey conducted by Lembaga Survei KedaiKOPI revealed significant price increases for coconuts in Indonesia. The research, involving 400 respondents, found that 83% experienced rising coconut prices in recent months. The average price of whole coconuts at the household level surged 85% from Rp 7,000 to Rp 12,950 before Lebaran 2025, with a further 9.5% increase to Rp 14,175 in subsequent months.
The price hike has particularly affected households and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). While coconut sellers reported manageable price increases, buyers faced significant challenges. According to Ashma Nur Afifah, Head of Research at KedaiKOPI, many consumers reported not only higher prices but also decreased quality and supply issues. The survey highlighted that the export-driven demand surge has created domestic market challenges.
The research indicated varying impacts across different market participants. Coconut sellers reported more manageable price increases compared to buyers. The significant price surge has made coconut products more expensive for households, particularly affecting Ibu Rumah Tangga (IRT) or housewives managing household budgets. The increased financial burden comes at a time when households are preparing for Lebaran celebrations, traditionally a period of increased consumption.
