Indonesia has successfully achieved rice self-sufficiency in 2025, according to the National Food Agency (Bapanas). The country is entering 2026 with a record initial stock of 12.529 million tons, representing a significant 203% increase over the past two years. This achievement demonstrates the effectiveness of Indonesia's food security policies and the strength of domestic agricultural production.
The carryover stock of 12.529 million tons includes 3.248 million tons of government rice reserves managed by Perum Bulog. The remaining stock is distributed across various sectors including: household producers and consumers, rice mills, traders, and the hospitality industry (hotels, restaurants, and catering services).
Bapanas Deputy for Food Availability and Stabilization, I Gusti Ketut Astawa, emphasized that this achievement is a testament to Indonesia's food independence through domestic production. Notably, the 2025 stock was entirely sourced from domestic production, with no rice imports. This accomplishment positions Indonesia as a leader in food security within the region.
The government remains optimistic about the country's rice availability, with Deputy Astawa stating, "The government is optimistic that rice availability is very strong. Indonesia has achieved rice self-sufficiency." This confidence is backed by the substantial carryover stock and the continued focus on agricultural productivity.
