Key insights and market outlook
Indonesia's garlic production has declined since 2020 after achieving self-sufficiency in 1995. Chairman of the National Economic Council (DEN) Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan emphasizes the need for superior varieties and science-based research to boost domestic production. To achieve this, Luhut suggests integrating research efforts across various institutions including BRIN, universities, and other research agencies.
Indonesia previously achieved garlic self-sufficiency in 1995, but production has been declining since 2020. According to Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Chairman of the National Economic Council (DEN), this decline necessitates a comprehensive approach to revitalize domestic garlic production. The key factors identified include the need for superior garlic varieties and science-based agricultural research.
Luhut emphasized that a sectoral approach is no longer sufficient and called for integration of research efforts across various institutions. He convened a meeting with key stakeholders including the Deputy Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Amarulla Octavian and Head of the Food and Drug Administration (BPOM) Taruna Ikrar. The collaboration aims to leverage collective research capabilities to develop effective solutions for enhancing garlic production.
Boosting domestic garlic production through these measures is expected to enhance Indonesia's food security by reducing reliance on imports. This initiative aligns with broader efforts to strengthen the country's agricultural sector through innovation and collaboration.
