Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs, Zulkifli Hasan (Zulhas), has firmly responded to Malaysia's initiative to declare durian as its national fruit. Zulhas emphasized that Indonesia has a stronger claim to the fruit based on production volume and biodiversity. In 2024, Indonesia produced 1.96 million tons of durian, significantly higher than Malaysia's production.
The Indonesian government's data from BPS (Central Statistics Agency) shows that the country's durian production reached its highest level in five years in 2024. The major production centers are located in Java, Sumatera, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi. Zulhas highlighted that durian is not just a commodity but also an important part of the country's culture and a source of livelihood for millions of farmers.
To reinforce Indonesia's claim and position in the global market, the government plans to promote Durian Nusantara branding, enhance production standards, and expand the export potential of processed durian products. The country boasts 21 of the 27 durian species known globally, with around 114 new superior varieties registered as of 2024, according to BRIN (National Research and Innovation Agency).
While Malaysia's durian production is lower in volume compared to Indonesia, regional reports indicate that Malaysia has seen an increase in the value of its durian exports, particularly for premium varieties like Musang King. Despite this, Zulhas remains confident in Indonesia's position, stating that national symbols should be based on data and reality.
The Indonesian government is taking a proactive stance to protect its agricultural heritage and strengthen its position in the global durian market. By leveraging its significant production capacity and rich biodiversity, Indonesia aims to solidify its status as the true home of durian.
