Key insights and market outlook
The Indonesian government has increased the Hajj pilgrimage insurance premium fivefold to 100 riyals (approximately Rp450,000) for the 2026 season. This significant increase is part of the Cost of Hajj Pilgrimage (BPIH) and provides comprehensive coverage including medical expenses in Saudi Arabia and death benefits. Despite the premium hike, the overall BPIH has actually decreased to Rp87.4 million due to efficiency measures.
The Indonesian government has significantly increased the Hajj pilgrimage insurance premium from 20 riyals to 100 riyals (approximately Rp450,000) for the 2026 season 1
The insurance package includes two primary components:
The insurance coverage is mandatory for all pilgrims and is included in the Cost of Hajj Pilgrimage (BPIH) that each pilgrim pays. The coverage begins from departure from Indonesia, continues throughout their stay in Saudi Arabia, and remains in effect until their return to Indonesia.
Ramadhan Harisman, Special Staff for Management and Transformation of Public Services at the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, explained that the increased premium is necessary to cover rising medical inflation, which is a global phenomenon affecting insurance costs worldwide. In Indonesia, medical inflation has reached 17% this year and is expected to remain high in the coming years.
To address potential gaps in coverage, particularly for medical treatment that continues after returning to Indonesia, the government emphasizes the importance of pilgrims being active participants in the National Health Insurance (JKN) program administered by BPJS Kesehatan. This ensures that any ongoing medical needs following their return from Hajj are covered under Indonesia's national healthcare system.
Despite the significant increase in insurance premiums, the overall BPIH has actually decreased to an average of Rp87.4 million for the 2026 season. This reduction is attributed to various efficiency measures implemented by the government, including optimizing the use of aircraft for returning pilgrims.
While the increased premium represents a significant additional cost for pilgrims, it provides comprehensive protection against potentially much larger medical and other expenses during their religious journey. The government emphasizes that this coverage helps mitigate financial risks associated with performing Hajj, particularly in the context of rising global healthcare costs.
