Indonesia to Explore Cross-Border Railway Project with Malaysia and Brunei

Regional Connectivity Initiative

The Indonesian government has announced plans to conduct a comprehensive feasibility study for a proposed cross-border railway connecting Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei Darussalam through Kalimantan. This development follows a proposal by Sarawak Transport Minister YB Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin during his recent visit to Indonesia's Nusantara Capital (IKN).

Background and Context

The proposed railway project aims to significantly enhance regional connectivity and foster economic cooperation among the three nations. According to Odo RM Manuhutu, Deputy for Coordination of Connectivity at the Coordinating Ministry for Infrastructure and Regional Development (Kemenko IPK), the Indonesian government will thoroughly assess the project's potential benefits and challenges before proceeding.

National Railway Expansion Plans

This cross-border railway proposal aligns with Indonesia's broader railway expansion plans. President Prabowo Subianto has directed Kemenko IPK to focus on expanding the national railway network, including both new line constructions and the revitalization of existing infrastructure. The government aims to increase the total railway length to 12,000 kilometers, restoring it to its historical peak during the Dutch colonial era.

Priority Areas and Infrastructure Development

The railway development strategy will prioritize regions such as Sumatera, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi. Additionally, the government plans to revitalize aging infrastructure, including tunnels that are between 75 to 100 years old. This comprehensive approach to railway development is expected to improve transportation infrastructure and support economic growth across the regions.
