Key insights and market outlook
Jakarta's entertainment business associations, including Asphija and PHRI DKI Jakarta, have rejected the draft Smoke-Free Zone regulation, citing concerns over potential revenue losses for entertainment venues, hotels, and restaurants. The associations argue that consumers in entertainment venues are already adults aged 21+ and that the ban is not relevant to their business operations.
Jakarta's entertainment business associations, including Asphija (Jakarta Entertainment Business Association) and PHRI DKI Jakarta (Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association), have strongly opposed the proposed Smoke-Free Zone regulation. The business groups argue that the regulation would negatively impact their revenue streams from entertainment venues, hotels, and restaurants.
Kukuh Prabowo, Chairman of Asphija, emphasized that consumers accessing night entertainment venues are already adults aged 21 and above, complying with existing regulations regarding tobacco product consumption. He pointed out that entry to these venues is restricted and requires payment, ensuring that only adults are present. Therefore, the association views the smoking ban in these areas as not relevant to their business operations.
The business associations are concerned that implementing the Smoke-Free Zone regulation could lead to significant revenue losses for businesses operating in the entertainment sector. This opposition highlights the tension between public health initiatives and economic interests in Indonesia's regulatory landscape.
