Indonesian Government Launches Comprehensive Sumatera Disaster Recovery Program

Extensive Agricultural Rehabilitation Efforts

The Indonesian government, led by the Ministry of Agriculture, has commenced a comprehensive rehabilitation program for agricultural land damaged in the recent Sumatera disasters. The disaster affected 98,002 hectares of rice fields across Aceh (54,233 ha), North Sumatera (37,318 ha), and West Sumatera (6,451 ha) ¹

The rehabilitation efforts will focus on repairing irrigation systems, rebuilding farm infrastructure, and restoring agricultural production capacity. The Ministry has allocated funds from the existing national agricultural rehabilitation budget, with Rp 148.53 billion available for moderate damage rehabilitation and Rp 310 billion for light damage repair through land optimization programs ¹

Infrastructure Repair Progress

The Ministry of Public Works has reported that 100% of national roads and bridges affected by the disaster have been reconnected, with ongoing efforts to resurface and improve these critical infrastructure links ²

Social Assistance Programs

The Ministry of Social Affairs has prepared Rp 600 billion in social assistance for disaster victims across the three provinces. The assistance package includes three main components ³

1. Home repair assistance of Rp 3 million per family
2. Daily food assistance of Rp 15,000 per person per day for three months
3. Economic empowerment grant of Rp 5 million per family

The government is prioritizing data verification through local authorities before disbursing these funds. The process is expected to be completed by the following week, with immediate fund disbursement thereafter ³

Implementation Strategy

The rehabilitation efforts are being implemented through a combination of government funding and community-based labor programs, particularly in Aceh where a padat karya (labor-intensive) scheme is being used to provide income opportunities for affected farmers during the recovery phase ¹
