Key insights and market outlook
Indonesian ornamental fish businesses are urging the government to recognize and support their sector's potential. Current export potential remains untapped due to lack of government attention, despite Indonesia having the resources to become the world's leading exporter. Industry leaders believe that with proper support, Indonesia could surpass competitors like Singapore and capture a larger share of the global ornamental fish market.
The Indonesian ornamental fish industry is calling on the government to take serious notice of their sector's potential. Sugiarto Budiono, CEO of Nusatic Nusapet, emphasized this need during a recent discussion forum held in Jakarta. The industry believes that with proper government support, Indonesia could become the world's number one exporter of ornamental fish.
The industry has faced challenges in the past, particularly competition from Singapore, which hosts international ornamental fish exhibitions that have previously overshadowed Indonesia's efforts. Interestingly, despite Singapore's prominence in organizing such events, 90% of the ornamental fish showcased were from Indonesia. This indicates that while Indonesia has the resources, it lacks the infrastructure and recognition to capitalize on this advantage.
Industry leaders are optimistic that with government backing, they can overcome current limitations and achieve their goal of becoming the global leader in ornamental fish exports. The sector's growth could also contribute significantly to the national economy through increased export revenues.
