Multiple Transportation Modes Show Significant Growth

The 2025/2026 New Year holiday period witnessed a substantial surge in transportation activity across Indonesia. Various transportation modes recorded significant increases in passenger and vehicle numbers.

Railway Transportation

PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) reported a remarkable 286% increase in motorcycle transport through their Motis service, with 5,334 motorcycles transported during the holiday period, compared to 1,868 in the previous year ¹

. The total number of Motis registrants reached 5,923 customers, with 21,213 passengers recorded during the period.

Toll Road Traffic

Major toll road operators saw significant traffic volume increases. Astra Infra recorded approximately 5.1 million vehicles passing through their toll roads during the period, a slight increase from the previous year's 5 million vehicles ²

. PT Hutama Karya reported 2.491 million vehicles on the Trans Sumatra Toll Road, representing a 43.32% increase compared to normal traffic conditions and a 7.63% rise from the previous year's Nataru period ⁴

Air Transportation

InJourney Airports, operating 37 airports, served around 10.2 million passengers during the Nataru period, showing stability compared to the previous year's 10.24 million passengers ³

. The peak passenger movements were recorded on December 24, 2025, with 543,000 passengers departing, and December 28, 2025, with 531,000 passengers.

Public Transportation

The Ministry of Transportation reported a 12.48% increase in public transportation passengers, reaching 21.46 million compared to 19.08 million in the previous year ⁵

Impact on Operators

The increased traffic had varying impacts on different operators. Hutama Karya saw peak traffic on December 21, 2025, with 140,419 vehicles during the mudik period, representing a 38% increase from normal conditions. The return journey peak on January 4, 2026, recorded 154,420 vehicles, a 78.33% surge from normal traffic ⁴
