Indonesia's ambition to develop sovereign Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities requires a comprehensive strengthening of its entire ecosystem. According to PT Indosat Tbk (ISAT), achieving AI sovereignty is crucial not only for technological advancement but also for enhancing national competitiveness and preventing potential digital economic growth disparities.
Senior Vice President of Regulatory and Government Affairs at Indosat, Ajar Edi, emphasized that Indonesia needs to have full control over the primary components in the AI value chain, particularly infrastructure and data management within the country. The company believes that Indonesia possesses the necessary network backbone and talent pool. However, the government must ensure control over the infrastructure and data management to achieve true sovereignty in AI.
The development of a robust AI ecosystem in Indonesia must be based on three fundamental pillars: infrastructure investment, talent development, and clear regulatory commitment. Ajar Edi highlighted that the availability of adequate digital infrastructure is an absolute prerequisite for AI development in the country. This includes both physical infrastructure like data centers and network connectivity, as well as the necessary technological frameworks to support AI applications.
In addition to infrastructure, developing local talent is essential for creating and maintaining sophisticated AI systems. Indonesia needs to invest in education and training programs that focus on AI and related technologies. Furthermore, a clear and supportive regulatory framework is necessary to encourage innovation while ensuring responsible AI development and deployment.
Achieving AI sovereignty presents both challenges and opportunities for Indonesia. On one hand, it requires significant investment in infrastructure and human capital. On the other hand, it offers the potential to drive economic growth, improve public services, and enhance the country's global competitiveness in the digital economy.
