Waste Management Challenges During Peak Travel Season

Indonesia's Environment Ministry has issued a significant directive to rest area operators regarding waste management during the Christmas and New Year holidays. The ministry predicts a substantial 59,000 tons of waste will be generated at rest areas throughout the country during this period. This projection is based on the anticipated surge in travel, with an estimated 119.5 million people expected to travel, representing a 2.71% increase from the previous year.

Regulatory Framework and Responsibilities

Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq emphasized that according to Law No. 18/2008, rest area operators are legally required to manage their own waste until its final disposal. The minister urged these operators to take their responsibility seriously and implement effective waste management practices. This includes proper segregation, processing, and disposal of waste, particularly focusing on the dominant single-use packaging waste.

The significant increase in travel during holiday periods poses considerable environmental challenges, particularly in terms of waste generation.
