Key insights and market outlook
The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) is developing a 2,000-hectare integrated shrimp farming area in East Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), transforming unproductive land into a comprehensive shrimp industry. This megaproject will cover the entire value chain from upstream to downstream activities. Additionally, KKP will rehabilitate shrimp and tilapia farms damaged by disasters in Sumatra, starting next year, without burdening the farmers.
The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) is undertaking a significant development project in East Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), by converting 2,000 hectares of unproductive land into an integrated shrimp farming area 1
The project will incorporate multiple stages of the shrimp farming process, creating a vertically integrated industry. Haeru explained that while previous initiatives like the one in Kebumen were end-to-end, this project in NTT will be more comprehensive, bringing together various aspects of the business from hatcheries to processing and potentially other related industries. This approach is expected to boost efficiency and productivity in the shrimp farming sector.
In a related initiative, KKP has announced plans to rehabilitate shrimp and tilapia farms damaged by natural disasters in Sumatra, specifically in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra 2
The KKP is working closely with local authorities to identify the needs of the affected farmers and to map out the rehabilitation efforts. Haeru has already communicated with the heads of fisheries departments in Aceh and West Sumatra to coordinate the relief efforts. This collaboration is crucial for the successful implementation of both the integrated shrimp farming project in NTT and the rehabilitation of disaster-affected farms in Sumatra.
