The Indonesian Ministry of Public Works is prioritizing the clearance of access roads in Aceh and North Sumatra following severe flooding and landslides. Minister Dody Hanggodo reported that hundreds of landslide points have made roads impassable, particularly affecting areas like Sibolga. While access to Sibolga has been partially restored using temporary measures, full restoration remains challenging due to extensive damage.
The Indonesian Ministry of Public Works is undertaking urgent infrastructure restoration efforts following devastating floods and landslides in Sumatra. The regions most affected are Aceh and North Sumatra, where extensive damage has rendered numerous roads impassable. Minister Dody Hanggodo reported that the area has experienced hundreds of landslide incidents, significantly complicating recovery efforts.
One of the hardest-hit areas was Sibolga, which became isolated due to the severe weather conditions. While emergency measures have partially restored access through temporary road repairs using makeshift solutions like paired coconut trees, the infrastructure remains fragile. 'Sibolga itu sudah terbuka. Tapi belum, sampai kemarin, truk yang kecil itu belum bisa masuk. Baru mobil kecil dan motor karena menggunakan dua batang pohon kelapa yang dijejer supaya bisa jalan dulu,' Minister Hanggodo explained during a press encounter at the Parliament Complex in Jakarta.
As of the latest update, smaller vehicles and motorcycles can navigate the temporary repairs, but larger trucks remain unable to pass through. The Ministry is working to enable access for smaller trucks to facilitate the delivery of essential supplies via land routes. The challenging terrain and extensive damage continue to pose significant obstacles to full restoration.
