Complex Engineering for Stacked Tunnel Design

The Jakarta MRT project has made significant progress with the Phase 2A CP202 section between Harmoni and Mangga Besar reaching 60.2% completion as of November 25, 2025. This complex engineering project involves the construction of Indonesia's first stacked tunnel, representing a major technical challenge due to the densely populated urban environment and existing infrastructure.

Deepest Station Construction

The project includes the development of two deep stations - Sawah Besar and Mangga Besar - built approximately 28 meters underground with a four-level design. The station layout includes:

• Level B1: Concourse level for ticketing and public facilities
• Levels B2 & B4: Platform and tunnel areas
• Level B3: Service area for operational equipment

Technical Challenges and Solutions

The stacked tunnel design was chosen due to limited space availability in the project area, which is characterized by high-rise buildings with older structures. The tunnel boring process is being conducted in stages due to the complex design, with TBM 1 (lower tunnel) and TBM 2 (upper tunnel) operating sequentially rather than simultaneously.

Project Timeline and Future Plans

The tunneling work is expected to be completed by mid-2026, with TBM 1 targeting completion by April 2026 and TBM 2 by July 2026. The overall CP202 package is scheduled for completion by 2029, aligning with the broader MRT expansion plans in Jakarta.
