PGN's Innovative CSR Program Transforms Waste into Valuable Resource

Environmental and Economic Impact in Tembesi, Batam

PT Perusahaan Gas Negara Tbk (PGN), as a Subholding Gas Pertamina, has launched a groundbreaking CSR program in Tembesi, Batam, through its PELITA Tembesi initiative. The program has successfully converted gonggong shell waste into a calcium-rich powder that neutralizes acidic agricultural soil, addressing two major local challenges simultaneously.

Addressing Soil Acidity and Waste Management

The project identified that local agricultural productivity was hindered by soil with low pH levels, which limited nutrient absorption and crop yields. Concurrently, the area had abundant gonggong shell waste that was previously unutilized. PGN's innovation, dubbed SI GOPAL (Sisa Gonggong jadi Penetral Lahan), processed this waste into a valuable resource.

Economic Empowerment Through Community Engagement

The processing of gonggong shells into soil neutralizer is carried out by the Lance Perkasa processing group (Poklahsar), which primarily consists of housewives with previously irregular incomes. This initiative has not only created a new economic opportunity but also promoted gender inclusivity in local economic activities. Members earn an additional Rp25,000 for every 5 kg of powder sold, providing a much-needed supplementary income stream.

Measurable Impact and Future Prospects

The SI GOPAL program has demonstrated significant environmental and economic benefits. In its first year, it reduced gonggong shell waste by 0.288 tons annually while helping farmers achieve 4% production cost efficiency. Moreover, the initiative has fostered a new community group that encourages female participation in local economic activities, contributing to both social and economic resilience.
