PT PLN (Persero) has been honored with the 'Leading Company in Reducing Carbon Emissions' award at the detikcom Awards 2025, held at The Westin Jakarta on November 25, 2025. This recognition highlights PLN's significant contributions to reducing carbon emissions and promoting clean energy transition in Indonesia. The award acknowledges PLN's various strategic initiatives that have positioned the company at the forefront of national carbon reduction efforts.
PLN's efforts in carbon emission reduction have been multifaceted. Through its subsidiary PT PLN Indonesia Power, the company has been actively selling certified carbon credits (SPE-GRK) on the Indonesia Carbon Exchange. This initiative directly supports the government's ambitious target of achieving net zero emissions by 2060. The carbon trading activity not only helps in environmental conservation but also creates new opportunities for green investments in the country.
As part of its long-term strategy, PLN has outlined an ambitious plan in its 2025-2034 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL). The company aims to add 52.9 GW of renewable energy capacity, including both baseload and variable renewable energy, as well as energy storage systems (ESS). This expansion is crucial for accelerating Indonesia's energy transition while simultaneously creating opportunities for green economy development through carbon trading mechanisms.
PLN has also made significant strides in international carbon trading. On January 20, 2025, the company successfully participated in overseas carbon trading, becoming the first Indonesian company to do so. In this inaugural international transaction, PLN sold 1.78 million tons of CO2e emission reduction certificates to foreign offtakers. This transaction was conducted after obtaining necessary government authorization to prevent double counting of carbon units.
The company's international collaboration extends to its partnership with the Global Growth Institute (GGGI), representing Norway, through a Mutual Expression of Intent Generation-Based Incentive Programme signed during COP30 on November 13, 2025. This collaboration is expected to facilitate Indonesia's largest carbon transaction, with potential emission reductions of up to 12 million tons of CO2e.
PLN's achievements in carbon emission reduction and its pioneering role in international carbon trading position the company as a leader in Indonesia's energy transition. The company's commitment to maintaining high integrity carbon standards and strengthening global collaborations is expected to drive further growth in Indonesia's green energy sector. As the country continues its journey towards achieving net zero emissions by 2060, PLN's initiatives will likely play a crucial role in shaping the national energy landscape.
