Severe flooding has struck Sumatra, Indonesia, causing significant damage across multiple regions. Padang Pariaman, a district in West Sumatra, has been particularly affected as it experienced its first major flood in over 40 years. The disaster has impacted more than 9 districts/cities across Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra, making it one of the most significant natural disasters in Indonesia in 2025.
The Indonesian government has swiftly responded to the crisis by launching emergency response measures. Deputy Minister of Public Works, Diana Kusumastuti, visited the affected areas and discussed the disaster with various stakeholders. Kusumastuti attributed the flooding to heavy and continuous rainfall over the past four days, which has been exacerbated by poor land use planning and management.
According to Kusumastuti, discussions with geologist Dwikorita Karnawati, former head of BMKG (Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency), revealed that while natural factors were primary, land use changes played a significant role. The conversion of land for settlements and other purposes has likely contributed to the severity of the flooding.
The Sumatra floods highlight the need for improved disaster preparedness and land use planning in Indonesia. The government faces the challenge of balancing development needs with environmental protection and disaster risk reduction. As Indonesia continues to experience climate-related disasters, this event serves as a critical reminder of the importance of sustainable land management practices and enhanced disaster resilience measures.
